Student Testimonials

When I was a freshman, CAPISE was not established, and I felt very isolated and alone in my experience. CAPISE gave me a place to explore not only my cultural identity, but how my other identities inform and influence my experiences and time here at San Jose State. I feel more connected to myself, my peers, and my community.

Student Affairs does a great job of empowering students to be innovators and create your own path to success. And I think that the Student Affairs' Student Involvement department is the #1 resource for students on campus.

One of the best decisions I made while being a student at 菠菜网lol正规平台 is making the decision to be a Peer Educator for 3 years. I took on different roles to support and guide my fellow students. As an S.I. Leader for the first 2 years, I facilitated group tutoring sessions in Biology and Chemistry. These interactive sessions allowed my peers to grasp high-yield topics and enhance their academic success, which was very rewarding for me to witness. Thank you to Student Affairs and the Peer Connections team!

  • San José State recognized the third annual Day of Remembrance in recognition of the incarceration of Americans of Japanese descent in the United States during World War II. In 1942, the building currently known as Yoshihiro Uchida Hall on SJSU's campus served as a registration center for local Japanese Americans prior to them being forcibly removed to incarceration camps.

As part of this year’s activities, the Center for Asian Pacific Islander Student Empowerment (CAPISE) received an official commendation from the City of San José.

“As we reflect on the past, we acknowledge the pain, suffering and resilience of those who were affected [by Executive Order 9066],” said San José City Vice Mayor Rosemary Kamei, ’04 MUP. “We recognize, now more than ever, the importance of remembering and learning from our history to build a more just and compassionate society, a society where we can live with freedom and peace.”

  • The Post-War Lives of Amputee Civil War Veterans: In August 1865, Ora D. Walbridge sat down with a pen in his left hand to produce a specimen of his best business penmanship. Three years earlier, a gunshot had left Walbridge’s right arm paralyzed. When he submitted his penmanship specimen, he joined a unique group of Civil War veterans: the self-proclaimed “Left-Armed Corps.” This talk examines the lives of these veterans in the decades following the conflict to highlight the lasting resonance of missing limbs during national reconciliation. Demographic and biographical information provides insights into how the veterans’ lives were shaped by their service and their wounds.

Allison M. Johnson is an associate professor of English at San José State University. Before joining SJSU, she was a lecturer at UCLA, where she earned her PhD, and UCSB. She is the author of “The Scars We Carve: Bodies and Wounds in Civil War Print Culture” (LSU 2019) and the editor of “The Left-Armed Corps: Writings by Amputee Civil War Veterans” (LSU 2022). Her work has also appeared in the “Cambridge Companion to the Literature of the American Civil War and Reconstruction” and “American Studies Journal.”
